bad parameters

hi. Love cryptogramming but ... Lately I'm getting a lot of 'bad parameter' notices when I try to upload. It's driving me daft. Why do I keep getting it? And is it affecting my recorded score?

I haven't seen this problem on my device since the early test versions.. do you mind working with us to try and debug this?

The bad parameter error occurs when there is missing data in the post information that client uploads. During the upload, the client advertises how many results it is uploading, and then the data for all of the results. If something is missing, the bad parameter warning occurs.

My first thought is that this is related to the quantity of puzzles you are uploading at once. So one question is: does this error happen when you upload a lot of puzzles at a time? Or does it happen even if you are uploading just one finished puzzle?

Second, what is the frequency? Say, one in two uploads cause the problem, or one in ten? All of them?

The best way to see if it is affecting your score is to check your scorecard before and after the upload. If you get the error, see if it has incremented your number-of-games-played counter.

Jason

I wonder - is there ever going to be more expansive sorts of add-ons/applications? For example, will you offer software that can be used on the LG Dare?
I don't have an iPhone, but I love playing cryptograms online or offline...

Problem with a cryptogram

I'm sorry but I could not find any link or heading to start a new thread ... so I hope putting this here will get a response.

I was trying to solve a Vladamir Lenin quote ... and was down to the last missing letter and it read ... without that letter:

Give me your _ears to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.

Letters left to fill in the blank above were: FJKQZ ....
So the only letter that makes _ears into a real word is Fears ... which
when entered is not the correct solution.

Is there an error in this quote?

silveryaspen 06-04-2009 08:36 AM

another possible error in a cryptogram ???

I was solving a quote by Malcom X ... and got all but one letter.
It read without that letter:

My Alma Mater has books, a good library. I could spend the rest of my life _ust satisfying my curiosity.

The remaining letters were: JQVWXZ

The only one of these that makes _ust into a real word is Just ...
but that doesn't check out as correct.

Is this another error????

Not my night ... I'm giving up and going to be.
Will check back tomorrow.

There's no error in the application.. your solution is incorrect. Just because the words fit with the ciphertext doesn't mean it's correct.. there are alternate solutions :) (BTW I've verified the correct solution in the database)

Was this done in the iPhone client? I searched the database that feeds the iPhone and couldn't find anything resembling this quote :(

That being said, I was able to verify that your solution is also incorrect. A google search turns this up:

http://quotationsbook.com/quote/23320/

"My alma mater was books, a good library. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity."

... so "was" instead of "has"?

Thanks ... that helped a lot ... especially since I seemed to be beating my head against the wrong brick letters!

Sometimes I reset the whole thing and in re-doing it discover I'm trying to change the wrong word ... and sometimes ... not even that helps.

silveryaspen 06-04-2009 07:41 PM

Aha ... this morning i realize fears is right and the word teach should be reach. Why something eludes us one day and not the next ... makes me wonder if parts of our brains take rests some days!

silveryaspen 06-04-2009 07:45 PM

The Malcom X quote was here on the regular computer cryptogram site ...
Sorry I'm not familiar with iphone ... but i'm guessing it has to do with cell phones ... I don't own a cell phone as I live in a very mountainous area
where when traveling reception is non-existent between the peaks ... so
my digital home phone is of more use to me ... and less costly with unlimited long distance anywhere in the usa and canada.

The first quote is "give me four years..." the Lenin Quote.

The second Malcolm X quote was correct by Jason,

This forum is for the I-phone clients only...just click on main forum and start a new post.
You just click on Main Forum and on the upper left you will see "New Thread" - Click on that and post away.

Hope that helps Pootie.:)

Another way of getting quick help if you are stuck is to go into the chat box and type in your quote...one of us is always in the chat box at one time or another and if you ask for help we will do our best for you.:)

silveryaspen 06-13-2009 02:03 AM

Thank you, pootie. I am sorry I didn't take a look here until today 6/11/09.
Also thank you for suggesting I use the chat box as many of you will already
know the answer to my question and the response would be more immediate.

I'm a member of the regular site and I'm going to be getting one of the new iphones within the next week. I'm definitely planning on downloading the iphone app. Will I be able to use this same account on the iphone version? If so, will the puzzles I complete on the iphone count toward the monthly contest?

admin 06-21-2009 05:38 PM

Hi Altoid -

The iPhone version is completely separate - different accounts, different competitions, different everything. The mechanics of solving on a iphone make it pretty difficult to compete with those using a full keyboard and full-sized monitor, so we decided to keep them both in separate zones for fairness.

How do i download puzzles for the offline mode???

Problem in iphone stats

Jason,
I just downloaded the cryptograms phone app for my new iTouch (santa was good to me this year!). I was just checking the previous months high scores for solving % and noticed that 2 players consistently have over 100% every month. In first place is smackit25 with 111.11%, and in second place is mikaselm with 102.04%. Futhermore, it's the same solving % listed every month - very strange.

App issues

Some of these are a little old, but I'll give it a shot. I love the iPhone app, but since the last update it has been a little wonky. I complete a puzzle, click the submit button and ...... nothing. It eventually goes through, but by then, my time stinks. I try pretty hard to keep a good time rating every month, so now I hardly play at all. *sigh*

Oh, and at the beginning of every month, once I've done 1 puzzle, the stats say I have done 2 but only completed one, so I always start the month at 50%

moviris 01-27-2011 09:46 PM

So, I thought I had solved this one by Dick Cavett:

"I'm perplexed when people adopt the modish appreciation Ms., which doesn'tt appreciate anything except common sense."

Do I have it or not? When checking it says I'm incorrect. I've kept looking for other possibilities.

moviris 01-27-2011 09:47 PM

oops

I just got it! Lol. Makes a lot more sense now! Haha!

lolpoop 07-21-2012 09:31 PM

hi. can someone explain to me how these are scored? why is it that every time i solve a puzzle with a low success rate in an above average time, i receive less points than i get for worse performances on easier puzzles?

wvwoman 07-21-2012 10:30 PM

Here's what worked for me:

do a search for "scoring question"---there's a thread with that title, and your answers are in those posts from some experienced members---it should clear things right up for you!

ecanarensis 10-20-2012 08:41 PM

Ummm....this feels like a dumb question, but which iphone app is yours exactly? I can't find a crypto game with 'puzzle baron' as a designer. I've been muddling along with just the crypto in the paper until this morning, when I decided I had to have more & found this site. Now I want them everywhere!
thanks,
ecanarensis

Hi. I can't answer your question, but Admin probably will. However, if you don't get a reply from him, at the bottom of every "page" here there is a way to submit questions and comments directly to him. I promise you that you will get an answer.
Hope you're having fun playing.

fishbum 10-23-2012 10:19 PM

I don't think it is the success rate that determines the score. It is the difficulty rating and the time that makes the difference.

Error and cannot complete puzle!

I am unable to complete a puzzle due to an error.

http://cryptograms.org/retry2.php?ti=43674281 If you can access my account.

Basically it the solution is "The Bluebird carries the sun on his back" however, the code has 'L' represnting the 'u' of sun and also the 'k' of back.

As 'L' is representing two letters, I cannot solve the puzzle.

bobthebald 06-04-2017 01:41 PM

Error in Puzzle

I cannot solve a puzzle due to an error.

The puzle has 'L' repesenting two letters. It represents 'u' and 'k' in a puzzle to which the solution should be "The Bluebird carries the sun on his back."

http://cryptograms.org/retry2.php?ti=43674281

If you can access my account. Please fix this as I would like to maintain my 100% solve rate.

munchlet 06-04-2017 02:47 PM

Hi, Bob --

The error lies in your solution, not in the puzzle.

You did not solve correctly. That's not quite what Thoreau wrote.

Go back and try again. Good luck!
