Hi everyone -

Unfortunately as many of you may have guessed, we've been having some serious technical problems over the past 36 hours. The long and short of it is that our hard drive experienced a massive failure, and our database backups were not sufficient to restore all site statistics.

This means everyone will have to re-register a new account and, unfortunately, start from scratch on the hall of fame, monthly competitions, etc. There is a slight, SLIGHT, change I may be able to restore these stats sometime over the next few weeks (I'm experimenting with a data recovery specialist) but at this point I would say the chances of that succeeding are below 1-2%.

I've done what I can so far to get the site up and running, and playable, though there may still be bugs as I'm having to do this for about a dozen sites this weekend, all of which were shut down by this hardware failure.

If you have any questions please feel free to post them here - my email (admin-at-cryptograms.org) may not be working for the next several hours, I still have to reset the email server as well.

My deepest apologies for this... this has truly been a horrible experience, the single worst data loss in my career. I hope you are able to resume play as normally as possible, and I'll do whatever I can to help ease the transition.

Thank you for your patience and understanding -

Stephen

Thanks so much for your reply. I just thought I had forgotten my password. And hey, starting again isn't so bad. It just gives us a chance to improve our solve rate and time.

Thanks for all your hard work to get the site back up and running. We missed you.

I wholeheartedly agree with Laura and yes, I also thought I had forgotten my password. You are doing a phenomenal job and I'm very sorry that you have encountered such a serious problem.

Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding! I was really feeling awful about this on Saturday, but I'm glad to see so many players returning, re-registering and willing to start anew. I appreciate your support more than I can say.

Cheers -

Stephen

I thought maybe it was God's way of telling me to get a life. I tried to play on Saturday when there were still glitches in the system and "lost" 4 puzzles due to the site logging me out when I hit the "check" button. The same thing happened when I tried the "recent games" feature so I never did get them back. Oh, well. Things seem to be working OK today. Thanks for getting us up and running again.

Opallady that was funny. I thought the competition was so hot that the servers couldn't handle the heat.
I'm just happy that the site is back up. Love the puzzles, and now I can keep my mind stimulated and working out!
Thank you!

Ha !! I was thinking along similar lines. I've been trying to cut myself down to three hours a day max. Got to get a life.

:D

Can anyone explain what the success rate means and how it's calculated? Thanks!

Success rate is how many puzzles are solved correctly. If you solve all of them correctly you have 100%. If you solve 9 out of 10 correctly you have 90%. If you solve 97 out of 100 correctly you have 97%. You have to be in the top 50 for total points to be eligible for the Success Rate Challenge.

Any idea when we may be able to use avatars again?

Not a big deal, but I kind of liked them.

I miss them too and I've clicked on "Edit Avatar" once a day since the catastrophe to no avail. I just figured this has been a bad week and we'll get them back eventually.

You should be able to upload Avatars now. Try it and let me know if it doesn't work.

Well, I guess some of us wanted to change our userids, anyway.
